Two years ago, Take Shelter and Mud director Jeff Nichols admitted to ScreenDaily that he “really wanted to make a 1980s John Carpenter film like Starman,” adding: “I love the way those films look.” Well, he’s done just that with his fourth feature-film, and it’s called Midnight Special.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“In the sci-fi thriller Midnight Special, writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers.
What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.”
Judging from the new trailer below, Nichols appears to have struck a perfect balance between wonder, tension, and drama. His go-to MVP Shannon looks set to bring his A-game, too, following up his magnetic performance in 99 Homes. He’ll have support in a stellar cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Sam Shepard, and Adam Driver.
Midnight Special hits theaters March 18th via Warner Bros.
