Café Tacuba, the Grammy and Latin Grammy winning outfit out of Naucalpan, Mexico, is getting ready to celebrate its 20th anniversary. And what better way to celebrate/get fans in on the fun as well then with a twentieth anniversary tour that will take the rock legends across Latin America, North America, and Europe over a 20 date span. Get it? 20 years = 20 dates. Talk about cleverness.
The real kicker to this is, not only did the band survive the Mexican Rock movement of the 90’s, but it did it without losing a single casualty. The lineup has remained the same for twenty years, producing six critically acclaimed studio albums throughout that time, including its latest work, Sino, which was released in November of 2007. Plus, thanks to the guiding hand of Oscar winner (see Brokeback Mountain), Gustavo Santoalalla, Café Tacuba has raked up a few Grammys along the way.
Biography now over, let’s move on to more news…
Although no albums are scheduled for release this year, the band has authored two new books. Details from the band’s official website tell us that the first book, penned by lead singer, Rubén Isaac Albarrán Ortega, is still forthcoming. The second book will consist of conversations and a biographical telling of their beginnings in Naucalpan, Mexico, where their ethnic influences amalgamated with rock and roll. After two straight decades of recording, living and breathing together, one can also expect a couple of dirty secrets to garnish sales. A documentary is also in the works, mostly filmed in Japan during their last tour to support Sino.
Getting back to the tour, Café Tacuba’s first stop will be on May 21st in El Salvador’s capital of San Salvador and will begin the American leg of its tour on June 24th at the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles, California.
