UFO readies a visit

In what is the most fitting album title of 2009 based on the name of the band, UFO has announced plans for The Visitor. On June 2nd, the British quintet will unearth the 10-track effort, which marks the band’s 12th LP overall and first since 2006’s The Monkey Puzzle.

The product of 35 tracks whittled down to 13 and then, whittled down to 10, The Visitor is described as “traditional rock music,” consisting of “gritty hooks, Vinnie Moore’s powerful riffs and leads, and Phil Mogg’s lyrics full of eccentric humour.” In other words, basically like everything UFO has produced in recent years.

    Per UFO:

“The parameters for our new tracks are that they have to work live…So clear arrangements, catchy melodies and a certain energy are required – all elements which we paid attention to when we worked on The Visitor.”

Formed in 1969, the British hard metal band instantly became a success with hits like “Boogie for George” and “C’mon Everybody” and throughout the years, they have influenced many other artists like Steve Harris from Iron Maiden and Kirk Hammett of Metallica. VH1 also ranked UFO #74 on their 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock special.

Though it’s been 40 years, the current UFO lineup still consists of three original of the original founders, Phil Mogg (vocals), Paul Raymond (guitar, keyboards), and Andy Parker (drums), but they also feature Vinnie Moore, who joined UFO in 2003, (guitar). Pete Way, another one of the original members, unfortunately is suffering from a liver disease and was not available for the production.

According to Phil Mogg himself, “All those who have been into UFO for a long time will find all our characteristic trademarks on The Visitor, and anybody new to the band will be impressed by our enthusiasm and dynamism. Without running down previous UFO lineups, it’s been a long time since we had a team as strong as this one. Vinnie contributes his youthful energy and amazing guitar technique, and in Andy’s return we’ve seen the reappearance of a musician who has always been very important to the band’s original sound.”
