In the latest example of Iceland’s current economic meltdown having absolutely no effect on the quality of music being shelled out by its bands, múm has announced plans for its latest studio album, Sing Along To Songs You Don’t Know. In fact, the state of the band’s native country actually served as the inspiration for the 12-track effort. “The album’s serene idealism is, in part, a reaction to the turbulent political situation surrounding its composition,” the issued press release explains.

Also included on the album, which was recorded in four different countries, is a sound described are songs “brimming with unusual sounds,” the result of such elements as piano, hammered dulcimer, a string quartet, marimbas, guitars, ukuleles, and even a parakeet — yes, a parakeet can apparently be heard singing on several tracks. Talk about mixing things up.

Sing Along To Songs You Don’t Know hits stores on September 22nd via Euphono Records. múm will support the release with a North American tour this fall.
