Watch: Blitzen Trapper’s “Black River Killer”

placeholder image

Still mining gold off of 2008’s Furr, Blitzen Trapper‘s “Black River Killer” is a narrative song — a rarity these days — with a linear storyline following a murderer compelled to do the only thing he knows how to. There is no redemption in sight for him, compulsively doing the worst thing possible. The song is tightly wound with a steady rhythm, that’s not quite folk, not quite pop or rock either but just straight up good, leading you to the inevitable conclusion of a doomed soul.

The band’s newly unveiled video follows this faceless creature who through luck and will manages to continue his spree from the Rio Grande all the way up to Oregon. Ultimately, the video is a visual representation of Eric Earley’s singing, taking its cues from the lyrics. Juxtaposing this story are scenes from a late night talk show studio with deranged audience members that creates a surreal jumping off point, as if your own sanity is spiraling out of control.

You’ll able to hear “Black River Killer” and more at any of the Blitzen Trapper’s upcoming tour dates. In fact, if you don’t manage to catch them in the near future… and want to — well, you’re probably just not trying hard enough. The band is going on an extensive trip. Starting off in California in July, they spend August and September in Europe including stops in Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, England and Ireland and finally wrapping things up in October at Austin City Limits. Talk about exhaustion!
