Phish details Joy

It may have taken a little longer than expected but Phish will soon shell out its first studio album in five years with the release of Joy on September 8th via personal imprint JEMP Records.

Recorded with Steve Lillywhite, who previously worked with the band on 1996’s Billy Breathes, in April and May of 2009 at Chung King Studio in New York City, the album will feature 10 tracks, kicked off by opener and single #1 “Backwards Down The Number Line”.

Content wise, Joy is said to include more improvisations than most of the band’s previous albums, evident in such songs as the 23-minute, 29-second “Time Turns Elastic”. For that reason, explains bassist Mike Gordon, “in some ways, I think this one is more for our fans than any of our other albums.”

Joy will be available in three configurations: CD, two-disc vinyl, and limited edition deluxe box set. The Joy Box as it is known will include the new album, a second album titled Party Time, a hardbound book with lyrics, artwork, and a DVD featuring live performances from the first half of Phish’s sold-out summer 2009 tour. The DVD features the band performing each song from Joy, with footage from the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, the tour’s opening dates at Fenway Park in Boston and many other stops, the issued press release states. The Joy Box will ship in early October.

Fans can now pre-order any version of Joy at the band’s online store, Phish Dry Goods. Those who pre-order the vinyl or the Joy Box will also receive a free MP3 download of Joy on September 8th. What’s more, any purchase will include an automatic entry for a chance to win a trip to the band’s upcoming music festival, Phish Festival 8, which takes place on Halloween weekend of Indio, California.
