Contrary to the name of their recently released album, The Fiery Furnaces aren’t going away anytime soon. In fact, the band already has two new releases planned… and as has been always the case with these New Yorkers, they’re far from ordinary.
The first of these will be a “separate, complete, cover, tribute, album” of the band’s recently released LP, I’m Going Away. That’s right, kids. The Fiery Furnaces will be going the way of Beck and covering themselves. To be released in two parts, the first of which will be unveiled in September, the cover album will see Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger splitting the reinterpretation duties right down the middle.
“Six songs by one with six by the other,” the band explains in a recent posting on its website. “And then another six by six… Only the words will remain the same. Though in Eleanors case, the singer remains the same. The song, never. Or mostly never.”
Think that’s creative? You haven’t seen — or heard — anything yet. For the second of the new releases, The Fiery Furnaces will be going silent, literally.
“Because file-sharing, or downloading, or whatever, has notoriously, or supposedly, made the production of the conventional with-audio record obsolete, the Fiery Furnaces will release a Silent Record, a separate posting on the band’s website explains.
“The Fiery Furnaces next album will consist of instruction, conventional music notation, graphic music notation, reports and illustrations of previous hypothetical performances, reports and illustrations of hypothetical performances previous to the formation of their hypotheses, guidelines for the fabrication of semi-automatic machine rock, memoranda to the nonexistent Central Committee of the Fiery-Furnaces-in-Exile concerning the non-creation of situations, Relevant to Progressive Rock Division, conceptual constellations on a so-to-speak black cloth firmament, and other items that have nothing to do with the price of eggs, or milk, or whatever the proverbial expression ceased to be,” the long-winded note goes on to read.
No word on the title of either of the two releases or when they will officially be unveiled. That said, the band is currently soliciting fan help for both. If you’re interested in either covering the Furnaces and/or “performing, interpreting, contradicting, ignoring, and so on, the compositions that make up Silent Record” send them an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
