There’s plenty of drama in the late night talk show world nowadays. And despite the appeal of Team Coco, we just want to go back to a time when there was great entertainment radiating forth from the last TV we see before we finally hit the hay. Thankfully, Spoon‘s performance on the Tonight Show gave us hope that it’ll all soon be OK again. Hopefully.
“Written In Reverse”, a new track from their eagerly anticipated Transference album, is a perfect song for a live performance; it already feels shaky and unprepared, like some dirty blues rock song. Britt Daniel’s vocals are especially hoarse and the live setting only perpetuates their worn-down, smokey appeal. But despite how great of a live track it is, it’s no safe bet. With a melody that thuds along like a jumpy horse and an extended musical interlude, it’s not your standard late night crowd mover. But once again the band shows why they’re so well beloved and put on a stellar number for a crowd in need of a good time.
Hey, NBC, you can keep the Masturbating Bear, but you won’t get Conan’s impeccable musical choices. Or Andy Richter.
