Taking a note from Peter Gabriel, Renée Fleming will look to bridge the gap between opera and indie this summer when she unveils Dark Hope, a brand new 11-track album featuring covers of Arcade Fire’s “Intervention”, Muse’s “Endlessly”, The Mars Volta’s “With Twilight As My Guide”, Death Cab for Cutie’s “Soul Meets Body”, and Band of Horse’s “No One’s Gonna Love You”. Appropriately enough, a cover of Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” is also included, as is a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” (guess she didn’t get the memo).

Explained Fleming of the project: “I’ve always been inspired by artists who have shown musical and intellectual curiosity and the courage to take risks. Because everything about the voice interests me, I felt it would be fascinating to learn a completely different style of singing.”

For the release, Fleming teamed up with producer David Kahne (Regina Spektor, The Strokes) and recorded in a “small, acoustic booth, with a microphone… in this very intimate style, is the complete opposite of how I usually sing,” she went on to note.
