Given its history (if you don’t know it, consult Wikipedia), the Newport Folk Festival, now known as George Wein’s Newport Folk Festival, has set quite a precedent for itself. Yet each year, the Rhode Island based festival continues to prove that it is one of the must-attend events of the summer.
Just take one look at this year’s lineup, which features a mix of both old favorites (Levon Helm, John Prine, and Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers) as well as some of indie’s biggest names (My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, aka Yim Yames, The Avett Brothers, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings). What’s more, Andrew Bird will use Newport to make his only live performance of the summer, while the likes of Calexico, Blitzen Trapper, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, The Swell Season, A.A. Bondy, and Justin Townes Earle are also confirmed to take part. The complete lineup can be viewed here; expect even more names to be announced soon!
Three-day passes will go on sale beginning Friday, March 26th at 10:00 AM EST. One-day passes will also be available. You can find the current day-by-day scheduled here. This year’s festival takes place from July 30-August 1.
