Riot grrrl icons Sleater-Kinney have been on “definite hiatus” since 2006. And while many thought that was a rather PC way of saying they’ve broken up, turns out they really meant hiatus as the band is looking to reunite sometime soon. And by sometime soon we mean sometime “in the next five years.”
Now, before you get your britches in a twist, there’s actual news happening almost now that you should be just as hyped about. In an interview with IFC recently, Carrie Brownstein said she’s got a new band. And they’re going to keep you waiting.
“I just started a new band after taking many much-needed years off from playing,” Brownstein said. “I can’t really talk about it that much, but we have seven songs, and there are four of us, and we’re based in Portland [Oregon] — but not all of our members live there.”
One of those collaborators? Try SK drummer Janet Weiss. As for Corin Tucker joining the fray, she’s undoubtedly out, all in part due to the solo album she’s working on. But Brownstein assures us that the beloved all-girl band will make a return as there’s no hard feelings left behind; just a boatload of intensity.
“[We] are still great friends,” Brownstein said. “We will probably do something [eventually]. [But] it’s so intense, that band. We spent 11 years committed to [Sleater-Kinney], heart and soul. To get back into it we have to be in that place where we can immerse ourselves fully. I think it will happen. We have to loop around, and we’re at the far end of the circle, away from the band, but I think we will come back and revisit it. And hopefully that record will be sometime in the next five years.”
