For those of you not familiar with Record Store Day, this is the one day of the year when the entire music industry pools their resources to celebrate independent record shops throughout the world. To give you an idea of the scope of the holiday, back in 2008 Metallica reissued vinyl versions of Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning then officially launched Record Store Day with an in-store signing. Countless musicians and celebrities endorse the global event and this year Soundgarden will be doing their part.
Come April 17th (Record Store Day), Soundgarden’s first single “Hunted Down” will be available on orange vinyl. The track was taken from the band’s Screaming Life EP, their first release with Sub Pop. Also on the 7″ is “Nothing To Say”, the original B-side from Screaming Life, the song that turned Soundgarden into the household name your parents just didn’t understand. And there may be more new releases to come for the reunited grunge pioneers. In a recent email to fans, Soundgarden offered up a special version of “Spoonman” recorded from a 1996 San Diego concert. From what they told their fans in the email this may be part of a bigger project:
“On this ’96 tour, we recorded all the shows (on two-inch tape) from the west coast run, to one day release as a live album (disc). We never got around to mixing those shows until recently and we were surprised at how crazy cool it all is!”
