As reported by numerous outlets, including our very own, bassist Chi Cheng of Deftones fame is currently still in a “state of minimal consciousness” after his 2008 car accident. Due to Cheng’s insurance company no longer paying for his treatment, Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu of KoRn initiated a musical project to collect donations (all of which go directly to Cheng’s family). The end result, an instrumental track titled “A Song For Chi”, is essentially one giant collaboration of musicians from all across the nu-metal and rock-peers landscape.
From Wikipedia, we have gleaned that members of KoRn, Sevendust, Army of Anyone, Hatebreed, Metallica, and even semi-estranged former KoRn member Brian Welch are all in on this. The song could be easily described as nu-metal meets prog rock meets “We Are The World”, without the vocals or bad ’80s hair, and most importantly, a warmhearted gesture bringing attention to the needs of Chi Cheng’s family and friends. This support system is immense, and fans are urged to donate anything they can.
Adding some light to the situation is news of KoRn’s current studio work, in preparation for what is tentatively titled Korn III: Remember Who You Are. Based on a leak of recent demo “My Time”, one can safely assume KoRn is trying to reinvent Life Is Peachy on a 2010 musical landscape. Reports are that Korn III can expect to see the masses in June. With Deftones’ Diamond Eyes safely out and about with stellar reviews, and June also marking Limp Bizkit’s resurgence with Gold Cobra, mixtures of anticipation and antacid tablets abound. Looks as if the decade has spun out and done a 360, no?
“A Song For Chi” can be downloaded for free at the donation website via Modlife, and for those KoRn fans out there, the band will be co-headlining this year’s Mayhem Festival with Rob Zombie alongside Lamb of God and Five Finger Death Punch.
