The Jam to reissue Sound Affects for 30th Anniversary

To many people in the UK of a certain age, The Jam are the epitome of the 1970s. Emerging from the punk movement to lead the mod revival, their influences were plain to see: a big shout to the British Invasion bands of the 1960’s as well as nods to soul, funk, and R&B. The Jam were harsh but honest commentators on Margaret Thatcher’s government and were hugely popular in the UK at the time, particularly with the disaffected youth of the time.

Sound Affects was the band’s fifth studio album and their most experimental. The record featured two of the band’s biggest hits, “That’s Entertainment” (allegedly written by Weller when he came home drunk one night) and “Start” (unashamedly using the bassline and guitar solo from The Beatles’ “Taxman”).

Paul Weller himself considered the album a cross between Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall and The Beatles’ Revolver. In August 2010, he said of the album, “I still feel it was our best record. There are loads of other things I like, but as an overall body of work, I thought it was great. To me, it still sounds fresh” (via Weller’s official site).

The deluxe edition will feature a remaster of the original 11-track album. Disc two features 22 bonus tracks, demos, covers, b-sides, and alternative versions, eight of which are previously unreleased. Rounding out the package is a 24-page booklet with extensive liner notes by Guardian writer John Harris, an exclusive Paul Weller interview, rare photos, and period memorabilia. The album will be released on November 1st (via I Like Music).
