Check Out: Dinosaur Jr. covers Neil Young’s “I’ve Been Waiting For You”

Gather ’round, rock and roll fiends, for a history lesson. Back in 1989, Dinosaur Jr., alongside other indie weirdos like The Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth, were tapped to record Neil Young cover songs for The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young. And while their cover of Young’s 1978 hit “Lotta Love” made the final tracklist, their version of “I’ve Been Waiting For You” from Young’s 1968 debut solo album was destined for the cutting room floor. That was, however, until now.

The cassette featuring the song was recently unearthed by band member Lou Barlow, who wrote that the effort “hasn’t aged well, not the condition of the tape (sounds whooshy + chewed), not the performance of ‘I’ve Been Waiting For You’… it ain’t great, but it’s RARE.” Check out a stream below courtesy of to SlicingUpEyeballs.com. Like so much of Dinosaur Jr.’s output, the track is decidedly noisier and a whole lot more filthy-sounding than the original. Even still, Papa Neil would be oh-so proud.
