In this business, young bands need to make connections or suffer the fate of falling into obscurity. Multi-instrumentalist Jamie Jackson and writer/visual artist Deborah Stoll, collectively known as LA-based Hot As Sun, understand that concept especially well, even as a band with less than two years experience. By unveiling a remix that features fellow up and comers Freddie Gibbs and The Kickdrums, the duo may very well live up to their name in the coming months.
The original version of “Come Come” was featured on an EP the band self-released last year. In it, Jackson and Stoll have built a song that defines their sound in the least narrow way possible: sultry lo-fi with a decidedly spacey, airy vibe to it. In fact, it’s reached a rare mid-point between the arsty and experimental and the bubbly and accessible. Check it out here.
In the remix, both The Kickdrums and Gibbs demonstrate their unique skill sets and understanding of the sensitive balance required for a truly great remix. Kickdrums’ input is minimalist, adding a sheen of hip hop bounce without overpowering the original production. Gibbs’ verse, through his standard thuggish output, marries wonderfully with Jackson’s ethereal vocal stylings. The red-hot number is streaming below.
