UK electro titans Underworld have been hired as musical directors for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, as BBC News reports. The duo of Rick Smith and Karl Hyde will oversee all the music used in the three-hour ceremony, working alongside Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle, who is serving as the artistic director.
Underworld and Boyle are no strangers, having previously teamed up on 2007 film Sunshine and a recent staging of the musical Frankenstein. Boyle also used the duo’s songs to soundtrack 1996’s Trainspotting.
The opening ceremonies are set for July 27th, 2012, while the entire Olympic Games run from the 27th to August 12th. As previously reported, UK rockers Elbow have been tapped by BBC to pen the game’s theme, while Gorillaz’s Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett will headline a day at the Cultural Olympiad.”
