Last year, the cynicism of JAILL’s third album, Traps, snuck up on listeners under the guise of danceable, surf-y power pop. The Milwaukee-based outfit’s non-album single, “Pointy Fingers”, subverts even the self-loathing lyrical aspects. Bemoanings of daily routines like “we walk and work and wait/ and wonder what we want” are negated by responses of “it’s who/it’s you/with you.”
And as frontman Vinnie Kircher’s delivery of those words leave you questioning if this is a happy love song or not, the video similarly plays on expectations. What starts as an innocent two-person dance party turns into a warping of space-time and a dive into a ball pit. Imagine if you swam through the multicolored plastic orbs at your local Chuck E. Cheese’s and wound up in a rehearsal space. Now click play and see what it feels like.
The Ryan Reeve-directed clip comes on the eve of JAILL’s new U.S. tour, which you can find mapped out below.
