Mississippi singer-songwriter Dent May will release his third album, Warm Blanket, on August 27th via Paw Tracks. The follow-up to last June’s Do Things was recorded in solitude in a haunted Victorian house in St. Augustine, FL. According to a press release, the 11-track album is May’s “most ambitious undertaking yet, a kaleidoscopic odyssey (through) existential pop, psychedelic funk, and melancholy soul with soaring arrangements ripped from the pages of classic American songwriting.” Lyrically, May touches on “youth, mortality, alienation, and unrequited love with startling honesty and humor.”
For a taste of May’s musical journeying, he’s released the lead single, “Born Too Late”. While May was “born too late to tell you that I love you”, that chronological impairment hasn’t limited his musical scope, combining the precision of a modern-day drum machine and random, synth-y effects with ’60s pop hallmarks like saccharine harmonies and an air of dreamy romanticism. The end result is a little bit 2013 frivolity, a little bit 1967 earnestness, and a whole lot of infectious fun.
