The 2013 installment of Adult Swim’s Singles Program has already featured El-P and Killer Mike bragging about their chain size and Kitty rallying against creepy dudes in nightclubs. Today, Toronto noise-punk outfit METZ turn the volume up way past 11 with their new single, “Can’t Understand”.
Fans of last year’s self-titled debut will welcome the track’s blistering deluge of jet engine-esque guitars, scorching rhythm section, and frontman Alex Edkins’ manic snarl. But amid the usual ear-splitting feedback, there’s some new intangibles floating about (a slightly anthemic air to the chaos, a more grating sensibility to their overall approach) that makes this aural assault strangely new and exhilarating. Adult Swim’s Singles Program runs for the next 12 weeks, and features contributions from Miguel, Dan Deacon, Mac DeMarco, Marnie Stern, Pig Destroyer, and Autre Ne Veut.
