Listen to Royal Canoe’s eclectic new single, “Birthday”

It was nearly a year ago that Winnipeg’s Royal Canoe first came to my attention at CMJ. Their intricate stage show was a hodgepodge of joyous moments, the six members bouncing hither and tither, turning this knob and pressing that other peddle, to create genre-less collages of pop sounds. Now, finally, the band has canned that live sonic science experiment for their 12-track debut full-length, Today We’re Believers, out September 3rd on Roll Call Records (Nevado Records in their home Canada).

New single “Birthday” shows just what kind of elixirs these gents mix up in the booth. The first forty seconds play like a minimalist Vampire Weekend on a rhythmic backbone. With a a sudden bowing of strings, the concoction starts bubbling with xylophones and twinkling synths. Similarly, the color of the vocals shift, leaving behind Temper Trap-esque highs for jittery raps over Menomena beats. Of course, all those reference points are merely descriptors, and the final compound that Royal Canoe comes up with is entirely their own.

Pre-orders for Today We’re Believers are currently on-going.
