As much as Angel Haze’s ongoing “30 Gold” freestyle series has been about landing lyrical KOs, it’s also given the young MC a chance to show off the true range of her musical abilities. Already she’s brought us to tears with a gorgeous cover of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball”, and today she once again steps behind the mic to croon with her rendition of Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness”. Stripping the track to a methodical piano-and-drum combo, Haze’s vocals capture the track’s essence, a beguiling mix of understated sensuality, youthful rebellion, and just a touch of heartache. Del Rey’s version may be a fake radio hit, but Haze’s cover is another emotional experience built on the pillars of simplicity and heart-on-the-sleeve sincerity. Stream and/or download it below.

Haze has also covered tracks from Jay ZKanye WestKendrick LamarGil Scott-HeronDrake, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The “30 Gold” series serves as a precursor to Haze’s debut album, Dirty Gold, due out later this year via Republic Records.
