Listen: Damon Albarn’s new song “Mr. Tembo”

In the lead up to his debut solo album, Everyday RobotsDamon Albarn has proven to be as musically and emotionally versatile as he’s ever been in his 25-plus-year career. He’s gone from dark and soulful (the title track) to unassuming and evocative (“Lonely Press Play”), and even somewhat hopeful and optimistic (“Heavy Seas of Love”). Now, he shows another side of himself entirely with the upbeat “Mr. Tembo”.

As Albarn himself explains, the Mr. Tembo in question is a baby elephant he met while recording Kinshasa One Two in the Congo back in 2011. While the idea of one of Britrock’s most important voices paying tribute to a cuddly pachyderm seems odd, there’s no arguing with the results: making use of a ukulele and a gospel choir, Albarn’s crafted an absolutely adorable pop song, full of whimsy and child-like wonder, the kind of track one might find on the soundtrack to Yo Gabba Gabba. Yes, the man knows his doom and gloom, but it sure is nice to hear him sing with a smile.
