Listen: William Tyler’s new 13-minute single, “Whole New Dude”

Folk guitar savant William Tyler is back with a 12-inch of new material, even though he just released his excellent sophomore album, Impossible Truth, early last year. Due out April 29th via Merge, Lost Colony collects three new tracks that were recorded alongside Tyler’s touring band (a first for the young songwriter): “Whole New Dude”, a reworking of Truth’s “We Can’t Go Home Again”, and a cover of Neu! composer Michael Rother’s “Karussell”.

Right now, you can hear the 13-minute exploration “Whole New Dude”, which, according to Stereogum, was inspired by “Tyler’s conversations with Hiss Golden Messenger’s Mike Taylor regarding Julian Jaynes’ The Origin Of Consciousness In The Breakdown Of The Bicameral Mind.”

If you thought Kurt Vile brought the sunlight with last year’s Wakin on a Pretty Daze, consider this the picnic afterparty. The way Tyler melds his country riffs with those backyard basslines and the Petty-leaning highway percussion… it’s a folksy BBQ sandwich for the bitin’.
