Even while hard at work on her next batch of glitzy dance-pop, Charli XCX hasn’t exactly remained quiet. There was the Portugal. the Man remix and her brief hardcore phase in January, then “Fancy” alongside Iggy Azalea in February, and a cover of Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” just last month. Today, she continues making noise with “Boom Clap”, her contribution to the forthcoming rom-com The Fault in Our Stars.
Aesthetically, it’s fairly similar to much of last year’s True Romance, though its pastiche of ’80s New Wave and anthemic dance-pop feels a bit more deliberate than mere sugar-addled fun. While she doesn’t offer anything new in the emotional content department, XCX has totally perfected the role of love-crazy teen girl with saccharine-but-sincere lyricism like “Boom, clap, the sound of my heart/The beat goes on and on and on and on and on”. Be warned, though: you may swoon ever so slightly.
