Over the weekend, Future made an appearance during Outkast’s reunion performance at Coachella, teaming with André 3000 to debut a new song entitled “Benz Friends (Whatchutola)”. However, when Future’s sophomore album Honest began streaming this past Tuesday, the song was nowhere to be found. (Similarly, the Drake collaboration “Never Satisfied” made available was just an abridged version of the song.)
Today, however, “Benz Friends” emerges online, and boy oh boy was it worth the wait. Production alone, the beat, this highly infectious groove of rattling drums and old soul harmonies pitch-shifted to oblivion, is a perfect balance of André’s off-kilter aesthetic and Future’s more R&B-inspired style. It’s what they do lyrically, though, that cements this track as a true album standout. While Future kicks more straight-forward lines (including a vicious parallel between gold diggers and grave diggers), Mr. Three Stacks manages to curse about 5,723 times and still make references to the Christopher Reeve-era Superman. Dungeon Family, indeed.
