On May 5th, The xx’s Jamie xx will issue his first solo single since 2011. Already we’ve heard one cut off the 12-inch record, last month’s “Sleep Sound”. Now, it seems the second, and final, song “Girl” has been revealed, with the help of fellow UK wunderkind James Blake.
As Pitchfork points out, during the March edition of his monthly BBC Radio 1 residency, Blake played a song, then titled “Bloke”, by someone he dubbed “Simon Tallywhacker”. Despite the suspicious pseudonym, it wasn’t until last night, during Blake’s April BBC Radio 1 stint, that he finally let the cat out of the bag: Mr. Tallywhacker is actually Jamie xx, and “Bloke” is actually “Girl”. Belated April Fools’, you guys.
Stream “Bloke”, err “Girl”, from Blake’s original March mix below (starts at 11:08).
Update: Check out the official stream below.
“Girl”/”Sleep Sound” is due out on May 5th via Young Turks. Pre-orders are ongoing.
