Listen: Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires’ new song “The Weeds Downtown”

The Dexateens may be best known in their native Alabama, but their members have gone on to national success in recent years. Since 2012, bassist Mike Patton (no relation to that other Mike Patton) has played full-time with the Drive-By Truckers. Around the same time, guitarist Lee Bains III struck out on his own, recruited a proper backing band in The Glory Fires, and released one album independently, 2012’s There Is A Bomb In Gilead. Following some steady national touring over the last couple years, Bains signed to Sub Pop this past January.

In the grand tradition of Southern rock, Lee Bains III and The Glory Fires represent the outliers, infusing bits of the MC5 and hardcore into an-already multi-faceted sound that references Gram Parsons, gospel, Delta blues, and The Band. It’s as nihilistic and bombastic as it its wholesome and heartfelt, a dichotomy that epitomizes their Sub Pop debut, Dereconstructed, due out May 27th.

Produced by Tim Kerr (Poison 13, The Monkeywrench), the 10-track effort is  “a careening, road raging, all night party of a record. Informed by a distinctly southern hoodoo, it is a master class in authentic Gulf Coast choogle. Bains has been properly schooled in how to throw down, so much so that even his hyper literate musings are no match for the blown out distortion that gives this record its blistering urgency. If your hometown is graced with a scuzzy dive and a few warm bodies to populate it, you’d best believe that the Glory Fires have been there, or are on their way back.”

Last month the band shared the rollicking opening track “The Company Man”, and today they unveil “The Weeds Downtown”. Clocking in at a healthy but well-structured four minutes, the track is akin to Black Flag doing a Merle Haggard cover, or The Ozark Mountain Daredevils trying their hand at hardcore. No matter which comparison you prefer, the band manages to skillfully combine crunchy power chords, earnest sentimentality, a healthy crop of feedback, and truly down-home, utterly infectious rhythms. Play this one at your next rager or barn-raising.
