Surf rock and doo-wop may seem worlds apart, but not to Bay Area trio Shannon and the Clams. Like their 2013 LP Dreams in the Rat House, the band’s latest single “Mama” is equal parts prickly beach riffs and soulful retro charm. When Shannon Shaw — who also performs with Hunx and his Punx — howls “Maamaa” over gnarled guitar, it’s almost like hearing The Supremes jamming with Dick Dale in some decrepit beach bungalow. Listen in below.
“Mama” is off Shannon and the Clams’ forthcoming 7-inch split with Guantanamo Baywatch, due out April 29th via Suicide Squeeze.
