Listen: tUnE-yArDs’ new song “Wait For A Minute”

With “Water Fountain”, the lead single from her new album Nikki NacktUnE-yArDs’ Merrill Garbus channeled the celebratory rhythms of Compas that she no doubted picked up on during a recent Haitian excursion. Today, she reveals a slightly different set of influences, exuding the silky slow jams of ’70s R&B acts like The Pointer Sisters and Patti LaBelle with “Wait For A Minute”.

Produced by Malay (Alicia Keys and Frank Ocean), the track features a much more even-keeled tempo, with dense, sturdy drum machines keeping the beat while a wobbly keyboard line adds a bit of oddball funk and swagger. (Fun fact: the Casio used is one Garbus has owned since childhood. How’s that for retro?) The focus, then, becomes Garbus’ vocals, eschewing her occasionally abnormal tendencies to belt and croon with a deep and assured sense of confidence and emotionality. It’s clearly inspired by the Quiet Storm format popular in the ’70s, but Garbus still maintains her Avant garde sense of quirkiness and unpredictability.
