Parquet Courts announce new album, Sunbathing Animal, stream title track

The "sharper, harder follow up" is due out in June

Austin-Brooklyn transplants Parquet Courts will continue to spin their own UK-branded post-punk with the release of Sunbathing Animal, due out June 3rd via What’s Your Rupture?/Mom+Pop. The “sharper, harder follow-up” to 2012’s Light Up Gold and last year’s Tally All The Things That You Broke EP “represents a huge leap forward in terms of songwriting and vision,” according to its press release.

    The press release continues:

To be sure, Sunbathing Animal isn’t a record about hopelessness, as any sort of incarceration implies an understanding of freedom and peace of mind. Fleeting moments of bliss are also captured in its grooves, and extended at length as if to preserve them. Pointed articulations of these ideas are heard as schizoid blues rants, shrill guitar leads, purposefully lengthy repetition and controlled explosions, reaching their peak on the blistering title track. A propulsive projection of how people might play the blues 300 years from now….

To get an idea, the band’s unlocked the album’s title track, a “roller coaster you can’t get off, moving far too fast and looping into eternity.” Personally, it’s jarring and a little starved for melody, but then again, I haven’t had my green tea yet, so? Stream it below and consult the album’s tracklist and the band’s many, many, many summer tour dates shortly after.
