On June 24th, Philadelphia singer-songwriter Timothy Showalter, a.k.a. Strand of Oaks, will release his third studio LP, HEAL, via new label home Dead Oceans. The 10-track effort follows 2012’s Dark Shores and sees the Phosphorescent and Damien Jurado tour mate at his “most autobiographical”.
“There’s an uncertainty to ‘HEAL’ that makes me nervous and excited at the same time,” Showalter says in a press release. “It’s sad, but it sounds like a celebration, like I’m crying and laughing and sticking both middle fingers in the air all at the same time.”
For a taste of the new album, take a listen to the opening track, “Goshen ’97”. Featuring J Mascis on guitar, it’s a punchy rocker about Showalter’s teenage years spent in Indiana. “I was lonely, but I was having fun,” he yelps of getting drunk in his parents’ basement, stashing his cigarettes, and singing along to the Smashing Pumpkins.
