If your only excuse for using the Internet is for cat-related media, then prepare to have Parquet Courts’ new video for “Sunbathing Animal” serve as your new home page. Staying unbelievably true to its title, the clip portrays the sunbathing habits of singer/guitarist Andrew Savage’s two-year-old cat, Frida, who enjoys a day of sleeping, rolling around, scratching the couch, and contemplating the secrets of the Universe. (All this while the rollicking punk anthem burns in the background, creating a sense of dichotomy so hilarious that I spit Fruit Loops milk all over my laptop.) I never thought I’d say this, but the video somehow beats out the annual Puppy Bowl. Watch it below:
In an interview with Noisey, Savage revealed behind lil’ Frida’s on-screen performance: endless bribes.
“Every afternoon [Frida] takes a nap in that spot, but that afternoon she knew she was being observed,” he said. “So I created a special tea that I found on a cat lady website that was full of herbs that could allegedly make a cat sleepy. You got some valerian root, some poppy seed extract, skullflower caps, chamomile. And I guess we basically made the sofa area of my apartment into a cat paradise in order to get her to perform. We had bird songs playing on the iPhone, the window was open for bird noises outside. We put some food on the couch and then finally some cat nip.”
“Sunbathing Animal” serves as the title track to the band’s sophomore album, due out June 3rd via What’s Your Rupture?/Mom+Pop. In support, the band will play Late Night with Seth Meyers on April 30th, where they’ll debut a brand-new song. They’re also on tour beginning in May.
