Watch: Sharon Van Etten’s bizarre video for “Taking Chances”

Sharon Van Etten has released the music video for “Taking Chances”, the lead single from her upcoming fourth album Are We There? In a press release, director Michael Palmieri says the video represents a bit of kismet: after pitching an idea to recreate the opening sequence to the 1962 Agnes Varda film Cleo 5 to 7, Van Etten responded with a picture text of the album art, which prominently features a “beautiful, aged picture of Agnes Varda standing in front of a bazillion reels of 16mm film.”

While I haven’t seen the film and can’t speak on its artistic intent (I only watch Michael Bay films circa 1994-1998), the video casts Van Etten as a tarot card reader whose profession proves quite the handful. Is this some bizarre, otherworldly magic or just a really creepy group of customers?  Either way, it seems fate wanted this quite specific video made, and who are we as lowly, insignificant mortals to argue? Watch it below.

The followup to 2012′s TrampAre We There? is due out May 27th via Jagjaguwar.
