Watch: Speedy Ortiz covers Blur’s “Bugman”

In the past, Speedy Ortiz frontwoman Sadie Dupuis has been fearless in her choice of cover songs, tackling both Ciara’s “Ride” and Josie and the Pussycats’ “Just Pretend To Be Nice”. (That’s right, R&B and a cartoon band, back-to-back). Today, with the full band in tow, Dupuis displays further chutzpah by with an acoustic rendition of Blur’s 1999 single “Bugman”.

Even without the aid of electricity, the band manages to capture the original’s potent energy, a truly forceful mix of lo-fi garage and grimy noise-rock, albeit with more of an early ’90s grunge feel to it. I’d like to believe that if Damon Albarn heard this version, perhaps while giving his baby elephant Mr. Tembo a bubble bath, he’d look up to the sky, nod his head knowingly, and crack the faintest of smiles. Well, maybe.
