Radio Black’s TJ Courtney is living the fantasy of pretty much every aspiring rock and roller ever. After sending a track to Foo Fighters producer Jon Lousteau in hopes of having him mix his new album, he was instead offered an invitation to record at Dave Grohl’s 606 Studios.
It gets better: Lousteau then suggested bringing in Foo’s Taylor Hawkins on drums, along with an all-star lineup of veterans like Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), and Mick Murphy (Chevy Metal). Courtney and the band jumped at the offer, packing up their lives in Boston and moving to Los Angeles to cut the record.
Though the resulting, as-yet-untitled EP won’t see release until the fall, Courtney has shared the effort’s lead single, “Run Away”. Between Courtney’s gruff vocals and Hawkins’ steady drumming, the track has an emotional intensity akin to the Foo’s own “Times Like These”. Over lightly distorted guitars, Courtney recounts the risks he’s taken in life, wallowing in doubt in the verses before emerging triumphant with the hyped-up chorus: “Run away and you find who you really are.”
It’s a poignant representation of Courtney’s real back-story, as he left everything he knew to pursue his own dreams. And when you end up recording in 606 Studios with an assemblage of rock greats, who can blame you?
