The Lone Bellow - Then Came The Morning

After Zach Williams and Kanene Pipkin performed together at Pipkin’s brother’s wedding, they knew their voices were meant to sing together. It took a few years to actually happen, however, as they were living on opposite sides of the globe (Pipkin was located in Beijing and Williams home in the States). Eventually they both relocated to Brooklyn and teamed with guitarist Brian Elmquist to form The Lone Bellow.

After spending the last two years on the road supporting its self-titled debut, the band reached out to The National’s Aaron Dessner to produce the follow-up album. Dessner obliged and together they holed up in a 19th century church, often using the pristine surroundings of the sanctuary as sonic inspiration. Those sessions resulted in Then Came The Morning, due out January 27th via Descendant Records.

The album’s latest single, “Cold As It Is”, finds the group embracing its Americana roots with a touch of grittiness. A stomping rhythm opens the track, before devolving into a greasy blues riff. Even with all that messiness, the group’s sweet and sultry harmonies come out mighty and triumphant. Take a listen below.
