Young Guv is the moniker of Ben Cook, a musician best known for being the guitarist in Fucked Up and a former member of the now-defunct hardcore band No Warning. As a solo artist, Cook makes music that’s decidedly less aggressive, with jubilant hooks, and a somewhat goofy indie pop sensibility.
While his first single, the sprawling seven-minute “Wrong Crowd” recalled Kaputt-era Destroyer, his latest track, “Crushing Sensation”, is much more playful and much more compact. Boasting punchy power chords, Cook’s likeable falsetto, and a pre-programmed drum beat, the song is infectious and jangly. Both “Wrong Crowd” and “Crushing Sensation” will appear on Young Guv’s debut album, Ripe 4 Luv, which is out March 10th via Slumberland Records.
