Joan Jett on Runaways’ Jackie Fox’s rape allegations: “I was not aware of this incident”

Jett releases a statement about Fox's claim that manager Kim Fowley raped her

Yesterday, Huffington Post posted an in depth story in which former Runaways bassist Jackie Fuchs, fka Jackie Fox, recounted her rape by band manager and producer Kim Fowley. Fuchs said that incident occurred at New Year’s Eve party and that her bandmates, including Joan Jett, were present and aware of what was happening. A representative for Jett denied that the guitarist was there, though another witness, Brent Williams, claimed Jett had told him never to discuss the rape with authorities.

Now, Jett herself has issued an official statement on Fuchs’ allegations. Read it below via Yahoo! Music:

“Anyone who truly knows me understands that if I was aware of a friend or bandmate being violated, I would not stand by while it happened. For a group of young teenagers thrust into ’70s rock stardom there were relationships that were bizarre, but I was not aware of this incident. Obviously Jackie’s story is extremely upsetting and although we haven’t spoken in decades, I wish her peace and healing.”

Fowley died this past January after losing a battle with bladder cancer.
