New York’s Soda Shop comes with quite the indie pop pedigree. Guitarist Drew Diver used to play with The Drums, while frontwoman Maria Usbeck sings for Brooklyn’s Selebrities. The two met at an Air France DJ set in 2010, chatting about their various music projects. Diver asked Usbeck to check out some of his demos. She agreed. The pair immediately clicked and, by 2011, they’d already put a single out together as Soda Shop. Now they’re finally releasing their self-titled debut album this September via Velvet Blue Music.

Their latest single, “Keep Swimming”, plays up both Usbeck and Diver’s pop prowess. Though they’re from New York, the it’d be easy to assume they were west coast surf-rock enthusiasts. Over a walking bass riff and jaunty guitar line, Usbeck sings a summery melody fit for the beach. The duo’s chemistry is palpable, both sounding in their candy-coated, pop element.
