Janelle Monáe was in Philadelphia yesterday to lead a protest march in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. She led the crowd in chanting the name of black individuals unjustly killed at the hands of police offices, and singing the chorus of her The Electric Lady bonus track “Hell You Talmbout”. Today, she’s released a completely new version of that track as a protest song featuring her entire Wondaland Records roster.
The new version of “Hell You Talmbout” features the added vocal presence of Deep Cotton, St. Beauty, Jidenna, Roman GianArthur, and George 2.0, all signees to Monáe’s label. Instead of singing, however, each member chants “Say his/her name” as they list off victims of police violence like Phillip Green, Freddie Gray, John Crawford, Sandra Bland, and others over the solemn beat of a drum line.
