Eight months ago, Kendrick Lamar performed as the last musical guest ever on The Colbert Report. Come September, he’ll bring his relationship with Stephen Colbert full circle when he becomes the first musical guest ever on Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Colbert revealed the news himself at the Television Critics Association press tour stop on Monday. “My last musical guest [on The Colbert Report] was Kendrick Lamar, and I would love for him to be my first musical guest,” he joked. “In fact he will be my first musical guest.”

Colbert’s Late Show premieres on September 8th on CBS. Joining him as leader of the newest band in late night will be jazz musician Jon Batiste. Considering the jazz influence on K. Dot’s To Pimp a Butterfly, we could be in for one hell of a debut episode.
