Costa Mesa, California indie rock outfit Roah Summit have accomplished much in their one year of existence. In 2014, they shared their debut EP, Deep Bloom, which saw them forming their lush and somber sound. For all their delicate melodies and lavish layers, the emotions felt massive. Now, they’re extrapolating this idea further with their latest EP, Giant, out August 25th.
The band’s latest single, “Paul Bunyan”, shares a namesake with one of folklore’s most famous behemoths. Synthesizer whirls ease into the song before it erupts into booming drums, piano clamoring and backtracked guitars. Each part embellishes on the other, working in harmony to create a dense and moving epic. The song is an apt portrayal of the band’s thesis statement, making a tender ballad feel like it’s 100 feet tall.
“I think everyone wants to be a giant in some way or another,” the band tells Consequence of Sound. “It’s just a matter of being honest with yourself and finding out who you truly want to be. And being big in that. That is giant.”
