2016 Academy Award Winners: The Complete List

Now in its 88th year, the annual award honors cinematic achievements in the film industry

    The 2016 Academy Awards took place this evening at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. Now in its 88th year, the annual award honors cinematic achievements in the film industry.

    Spotlight won Best Picture, beating The Revenant, The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, and Room.

    Alejandro González Iñárritu won his second Best Director Oscar for The Revenant. Last year, he won the same award for Birdman, making him the first filmmaker in 66 years to win back to back in the category.

    Finally, after five Best Actor nominations, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won the award for his role as fur trapper Hugh Glass in The Revenant. Finally. Brie Larson, on the other hand, claimed Best Actress for her role as a captive young mother in Room.

    Alicia Vikander won Best Supporting Actress for her role as loving wife Gerda in The Danish Girl. Mark Rylance knocked out Rocky himself and took home Best Supporting Actor for his role as convicted spy Rudolf Abel in Bridge of Spies.

    Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy took home the night’s first award, winning Best Original Screenplay for Spotlight. Adam McKay and Charles Randolph followed up with Best Adapted Screenplay for The Big Short.

    Mad Max: Fury Road won its first award for Best Costume Design and its second for Best Production Design and its third for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and its fourth for Best Editing and its fifth for Best Sound Editing and its sixth for Best Sound Mixing.

    In a surprise victory, however, Ex Machina snagged Best Visual Effects, beating Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Martian, and The Revenant.

    Emmanuel Lubezki won his third Best Cinematography Oscar for his work on The Revenant.

    After six nominations, the great Ennio Morricone finally won an Oscar for Best Original Score, thanks to his fabulous work on Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. He received a standing ovation.

    Sam Smith won Best Original Song for the 15th best James Bong song, “Writing’s on the Wall”.

    A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness grabbed Best Documentary Short Film, following Louis C.K.’s hilarious monologue. Asif Kapadia’s Amy won Best Documentary Feature.

    László Nemes’ Hungarian concentration camp drama Son of Saul won Best Foreign Language Film.

    Bear Story won Best Animated Short Film, making it the first Oscar for a Chilean film. Inside Out, as expected, won Best Animated Feature Film.
