Following the lukewarm reception of his prog-rock debut, Pope Francis is hoping to find better success in the film medium. Yes, as Variety reports, the Pontifex has signed on for a role in the forthcoming feature entitled Beyond the Sun.
Billed as a family adventure based on the Gospel, the film marks not only the acting debut of Francis, but of any pope for that matter. Reportedly, Francis asked filmmakers to make a movie that communicated Jesus’ message to children. Sounds like Oscar bait to me, but what do I know.
Production is set to begin shortly in Italy. The film will be distributed worldwide by Ambi, the same production firm behind a forthcoming remake of Christopher Nolan’s Memento and a biopic about Lamborghini founder Ferruccio Lamborghini.
All profits from Beyond the Sun will be donated to Argentinean charities El Alemendro and Los Hogares de Cristo, which aid at-risk children and young adults.
