Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon teams up with Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers for “Over the Rise” — listen

Vernon and Hornsby will also appear together on The National's forthcoming Grateful Dead tribute album

Bruce Hornsby and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon recently teamed up to cover The Grateful Dead as part of The National’s massive 59-song tribute album due out in May. But it appears that “Black Muddy River” wasn’t the only song to come out of their collaboration. Today, Hornsby shared his latest single with his band The Noisemakers and — well, wouldn’t you know it, that’s Vernon in the background, providing some of those high-register backing vocals that other musicians (ahem, Kanye West) have come to rely on him for. Yes, there is now a direct line between Kanye West and Bruce Hornsby. What a world.

The track, entitled “Over the Rise”, is available to stream below via Pitchfork. Aside from Vernon’s voice, it features a rich, folky melody sussed out with what sounds like an entire forest of strings. It will appear on Hornsby’s new album with The Noisemakers, Rehab Reunion, which is due out June 17th via 429 Records. Scroll down to see the full tracklist, which includes a closer called “Celestial Road” featuring R&B legend Mavis Staples.
