This summer, Lou Reed will be honored with a special tribute event at New York’s Lincoln Center. Set to take place on Saturday, July 30th, “The Bells” is an all-day affair featuring live music, films, and readings related to The Velvet Underground legend, who passed away in 2013 due to complications from liver disease. The festivities will be curated by his wife and artist Laurie Anderson, as well as longtime collaborator and producer Hal Willner.
While a full schedule for the tribute has yet to be revealed, a press release (via Pitchfork) lists a few highlights: a group tai chi class led by Reed’s teacher Master Ren Guangyi; a screening of Julian Schnabel’s 2008 documentary/concert film Berlin: Live at St. Ann’s Warehouse; and Lou Reed: Drones, Anderson’s three-hour sound installation featuring feedback from Reed’s equipment.
The event will be part of Lincoln Center’s annual Out of Doors Festival. The iconic venue was of great importance to Reed and Anderson, as they frequented its many performances and presentations. It also was the site of Reed’s public memorial in November 2013, which drew hundreds of attendees.
More details on “The Bells”, which was named after the title track of Reeds’ 1979 album, will be announced on May 4th.
