Now that Daniel Craig is moving on from playing James Bond every two to four years, the British actor is lining up a wide range of projects. The latest contract he’s reportedly signed is to join Halle Berry in Kings, a drama set in Los Angeles during the 1992 Rodney King riots.
The film is a passion project of Mustang director Deniz Gamze Erguven. Craig will play Ollie, a white man living in South Central Los Angeles, a statistical rarity even today. He falls in love with Halle Berry’s character, and the pair work together to find and protect her children as the riots rage around them.
It’s not currently known when Kings might go before cameras. Craig has a full plate, with Steven Soderbergh’s NASCAR heist movie Logan Lucky shooting this fall and Showtime’s 20-episode adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s novel Purity on deck. Although, with Purity set to air over two years, there may be a filming break in there for Craig to sneak off and do Kings.
