When US audiences think of The Office, they think Steve Carell as the bumbling Michael Scott. But that character was actually based on David Brent, created and played by Ricky Gervais for the original BBC version of the series. While Carell has long since moved on from Dunder Mifflin, Brent is back, baby.
The new mockumentary film David Brent: Life on the Road picks up 12 years after the end of the original The Office’s end. Brent, now a traveling salesman of women’s personal hygiene and household cleaning products, still hasn’t given up his dreams of being a rockstar. He finally decides to sell all his possessions, hire a bunch of session musicians and a rapper (Ben Bailey Smith), and take his show on the road. Of course, Brent being Brent, he doesn’t quite realize what a complete buffoon he looks like singing 311-esque reggae rock. As Smith’s Dom puts it, “”You think it’s painful to watch? I have to stand next to him.”
Gervais wrote, directed, and produced the film himself, in addition to writing the music and lyrics for the fictional band, Foregone Conclusion. Andy Burrows of Razorlight and We are Scientists helped with the musical arrangements.
