Rihanna releases video for “Sledgehammer” shot entirely on IMAX cameras — watch

The song from the Star Trek soundtrack gets the really big screen treatment

Earlier this week, Rihanna released her contribution to the Star Trek Beyond soundtrack, a soaring ballad called “Sledgehammer”. Today, the video for the song premiered in a most unique fashion in IMAX theaters across the country. The clip, directed by Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways, Netflix’s Daredevil), is the first music video ever to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras, and it certainly makes the most of the format with its extraterrestrial setting.

Rihanna, done up in alien makeup and facial tattoos, stands alone on what appears to be a largely abandoned planet. But she’s far from helpless there, as she reveals some elemental warping abilities with just the swipe of her hand. There’s also cameos from the USS Enterprise and the swarming robots that can be seen plaguing its crew in the trailers for the new film.

Watch the video above, and catch Star Trek Beyond in theaters on July 22nd. Below, watch Rihanna express her fandom for the franchise in a video posted on Facebook.

“Sledgehammer” follows Rihanna’s new full-length album Anti, which was released earlier this year.
